Creating a Gentle Releasing Ceremony

A young child holds a glass jar toward the sky as glowing butterflies float upward, symbolizing love, release, and remembrance during a pet memorial ceremony.

A Beautiful Way to Honor a Beloved Pet

Losing a pet is one of the quiet heartbreaks of life — the kind that slips into your chest and settles there, tender and deep. Our pets are with us for such a short chapter, but somehow, they fill the whole story. They curl into our routines, our memories, our laughter… and when they’re gone, the house feels different. Quieter. Still.

If you’re saying goodbye to a treasured furry (or feathered, or finned) friend, a simple releasing ceremony can bring comfort, connection, and a sense of peace — not just for you, but for your whole family. Children especially need a gentle way to express their feelings, remember their pet, and feel that their love still matters. That’s why I adore this idea: creating a moment where everyone can gather, share memories, and send love upward in a beautiful, symbolic way.

Creating a Simple, Heartfelt Pet Releasing Ceremony

There’s no “right” way to honor a pet — only your way. But here’s a ceremony outline you can use for any animal you’ve loved:

Opening Words

Invite everyone to gather in the backyard, garden, or any peaceful place. Start with a short welcome and a comforting truth:

“We are here today because Farley was loved — deeply, joyfully, and truly. Pets change our hearts forever, and today we honor the gift Farley was in our lives.”

(You can replace “Farley” with your own pet’s name.)

Short Prayer or Moment of Gratitude

This can be spoken by anyone the family chooses:

“Heavenly Father, thank You for the years of companionship, comfort, and joy Farley brought into our lives. We give thanks for the memories, the lessons, and the unconditional love we were blessed to receive. Please help us feel peace today. Amen.”

Sharing Memories

Invite anyone who would like to speak:

  • A funny memory

  • A favorite quirk

  • A moment that meant something

  • Something the pet taught them

Children often love this part — it helps release their sadness in the sweetest ways.

Poem Reading

If you'd like to use the original poem, it is okay — but here is a new original version so you never have to worry about rights:

“Until We Meet Again”
by Walter Davis

You ran ahead a little ways,
but love still keeps us near.
Your pawprints stay within our hearts,
whispering, “I’m still here.”

And when the time for heaven comes,
I know it’s not the end —
I’ll see you running toward me then,
my faithful, loving friend.

Slideshow or Photo Moment

If you’re using one of the pet slideshow templates, this is the perfect time to play it.
If not, simply gather around a printed photo.

The Releasing Ceremony (Simple Instructions for Families)

“Bubble soap is on the table by the back door. Please take one bottle and wait for the signal. When we’re ready, we’ll all blow our bubbles together — watching them rise gently toward heaven, carrying our love to Farley. Thank you for being part of this beautiful goodbye.”

So simple. So meaningful.
And the visual of bubbles drifting into the sunlight… it brings so much peace.

A Sweet Optional Touch: Memory Pebbles

Place a small bowl of smooth pebbles next to a few markers.
Invite guests — especially children — to write their name or a tiny message.

These can be placed:

  • On your pet’s resting place

  • In a garden planter

  • Along a stepping stone path

  • In a memory jar indoors

It becomes a little oasis of love — a place you can visit whenever you miss them.

Why These Moments Matter

Pets teach us joy, devotion, gentleness, and unconditional love.
Giving them a ceremony — even a small one — honors what they gave you.

It also brings healing.
Real, measurable healing.

And your family deserves that.
